Help Keiki Go Green

We all hope to make a difference in this world, and one way we can do so is by leaving our environment better than how we found it. We are facing a variety of environmental issues, which means it’s important to start making green lifestyle changes today. Moving towards a greener lifestyle starts with you, but ultimately continues with today’s keiki. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, caregiver, or friend, leading by example and living an eco-friendly lifestyle can help positively influence the growing minds around you.

Did you know one of the best ways to teach others to form certain habits is by doing them yourself, and leading with example? Showing respect and care for the environment can motivate others to follow in your footsteps. Check out these quick tips on how to inspire the keiki around you to move towards a green future!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We all know the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, but despite being common knowledge for some, many folks are often unsure about which items can actually be reused or recycled. We encourage your household to research the local recycling requirements (check out these resource at opala.org!) to make sure that your efforts make the biggest impact! When considering ways to reduce and reuse, look through your belongings and see what you can give new life to – you may find some hidden treasures!

Conserve and Reserve
Make positive changes in your everyday lifestyle by reminding members of your household to turn off, power down, and unplug electronics when not in use. Teaching your kids to pay attention to energy use throughout their household can help them learn eco-friendly habits that take minimal effort. You can also show your family how to reuse leftover water for plants and rinsing or soaking dishes.

Respect the Environment
What seems like the simplest recommendations is also the most important starting point when going green. Showing respect for the earth and our surroundings help teach keiki how special the world around them is. Talk with your kids about the many ways you can show respect to the environment and write them down to help remember them!

  • One great lesson to teach those around you is to leave a place better than how you found it. For example, when out at the beach or parks, be sure to pick up any trash or litter you see around – even if it isn’t yours. Just make sure it’s safe to do so!
  • Another great lesson is ‘look but don’t touch.’ This applies to various aspects of wildlife, such as sea turtles and other marine life, or flowers and surrounding plants. Teaching your kids to refrain from picking flowers or poking animals will show them the importance of respecting another being’s space.
  • You can also help the environment by helping your family members start a small garden, create bird feeders, or the important of properly watering their plants.
Pay it Forward
Donate your gently used items to members of your community. During these unprecedented times, many folks are unfortunately struggling to obtain basic necessities. Consider doing a monthly closet clean out to go through any old clothes, shoes, toys, appliances, electronics, or other items, and donate to community members who may need them. Not only does this help your household refrain from dumping unwanted belongings, but it teaches your kids the importance of assisting those around them and benefits the community.
