Getting ready for a hurricane can be stressful, which is why you should always be fully prepared in advance. Since we are quickly approaching hurricane season, it’s definitely time to start preparing if you haven’t done so already.
Hurricanes, a type of storm also known as Tropical Cyclones, can produce life-threatening effects such as:
- High winds in excess of 74 mph
- Storm surges that can exceed 40 feet
- Heavy rains that will exceed flash flood conditions
In preparation for a hurricane, it is important to have an emergency plan established and to consider the following tips:
Shelter in Place v. Evacuate
Each person should decide whether to shelter in place or evacuate their home. If you live near the coastline, a river, streambed, or on the mountain ridgeline, or in a home built before 1995 constructed out of wood, you may need to evacuate. If you are evacuating to a shelter, click here for a list of shelters in your area and make note of 2 or 3 that are closest to your home.

Take Inventory of Your PropertyTake photos of your personal property such as clothes, jewelry, furniture, electronics, and other prized possessions for potential insurance claims. Also, be sure to take photos/video of your home to document the condition of your residence prior to a natural disaster.
Important Documents
Scan copies and move all important documents (i.e. birth certificate, passports, finance information, insurance policies) to a safe location. Take them with you if evacuation is necessary.
