Plastic Free July is a global movement that has inspired over 100 million people across 190 countries to be part of the solution to plastic pollution. According to the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund, an estimated 15-20 tons of plastic wash up on the shores of our islands every year. To protect Hawaiʻi’s natural and fragile ecosystems, we must reduce our plastic consumption however we can. Together, we can work towards cleaner streets, oceans and communities. Here are some eco-friendly swaps you can make this July!
- Reusable shopping bags: Grab that reusable bag as you head out the door for your shopping trip. Reusable bags made from recycled materials are a great alternative to the typical plastic shopping bag. To avoid forgetting your reusable bags when on the go, consider storing them in your car or purse.
- Metal water bottles: As summer approaches, it’s important to stay hydrated. Consider swapping out your plastic bottles with a stainless steel or glass bottle. Reusable bottles are a summer must-have. When purchasing drinks from your favorite smoothie shop or café, opt for metal or paper straws.
- Beeswax wraps: When packing school lunches, it’s easy to reach for the single-use zip bag for sandwiches and snacks. Yet, there are sustainable alternatives to reduce plastic use. Reusable beeswax wraps are a natural and biodegradable alternative to storing lunches or leftovers.
- Bamboo toothbrushes: Bamboo toothbrushes have been gaining popularity across the country as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic ones. These brushes are biodegradable and help to reduce the waste during daily routines. Purchasing a toothbrush with a replaceable head can also minimize plastic use.
